Income Protection Cover

Intelligent cover that moves with your clients.

Our Income Protection Cover is designed with a range of enhanced Guaranteed Insurability Options that allows you to update cover as your client’s circumstances change. Alongside that it provides greater certainty at claim through our Earnings Guarantee. Through engagement with the Vitality Programme, we help them avoid them needing to make a claim at all. In addition, we incentivise our members to do improve their health by boosting their claim payment for the first six months of their claim. We also give them unlimited access to rehabilitation support to get them back to work.

Breakdown of Income Protection claims in 2024

Cancer was the most common cause of claim in 2024, followed by musculoskeletal and mental health related illnesses. Almost three quarters of claims for Income Protection (74%), were for illnesses covered by our enhanced Recovery Benefit which provides access to private healthcare pathways to claimants to help them return to work sooner.

Our Enhanced Recovery Benefit

Our Recovery Benefit, launched in 2023, provides unlimited access to rehabilitation support to get claimants back to work. Originally covering cancer, musculoskeletal and mental health-related claims, we have expanded support for both new and existing members at the point of claim with a new Neurological Recovery Pathway.

What's more, when they go down a Recovery Pathway during their deferred period, we'll waive their premium for up to three months.

Our Recovery Pathways cover the four most common reasons for a claim

Musculoskeletal

Virtual and in-person physiotherapy support

Mental Health

Face-to-face or online Talking Therapy available

Cancer Treatment

8-week digital programme for mental health, physio and nutrition

Neurological

Tailored neurological rehabilitation

"My life was turned upside down"

At the age of just 30, William did not expect to be diagnosed with a rare brain tumour

In January 2024, William*, a self-employed personal trainer, began experiencing persistent headaches, neck pain, and nausea. After undergoing scans, he was diagnosed with a rare and unclassified brain tumour before undergoing surgery in early February, followed by six-and-a-half weeks of craniospinal radiotherapy.

Thankfully, William had taken out a VitalityLife plan in 2020, which included Income Protection Cover. This meant he could claim for his time off work. After his deferred period, he began receiving monthly payments of £1,140. These payments helped support him and his young family – his fiancée Jessica and their 10-month-old daughter – while he focused on recovery.

William is now recovering well and hopes to return to work gradually, starting with a few clients per week. Vitality has also referred him for vocational support to help ease his transition back to work.

Without Income Protection Cover, William and his family would have faced significant financial strain during his treatment and recovery. Through our Earnings Guarantee, he received his full benefit amount even when his recent income had dipped due to reduced client work after becoming a father. *Real name and some details have been changed to protect anonymity.
